Story 1
With the July 22 decision by the World Court in the Hague that Kosovo's unilateral secession from Serbia in 2008 did not violate international law, we thought it would be an opportune moment to look back at Joachim Ladefoged's powerful body of work on the Albanians during the Serbian conflict from 1997 to 2000. During the war, some 12,000 people from Kosovo were killed, of whom 4,000-7,000 were Albanians, and up to 700,000 Albanians from Kosovo took refuge in the neighboring country of Albania.

Great photographs but i mus protest about the captions. The War is and awful thing and I am really truly sorry for all that have lost their loved ones, but i don't see the connection between poverty in Albania and War in Kosovo in 98-99? The Albania is sovereign country with it's own borders and politics and is by no means a reason for recession of Kosovo Albanians from Serbia. There were atrocities done on both sides, like in any other War, but no one is telling the stories about the Monasteries from XIII-XVIII century that have been burned to the ground, nor the refuges from northern parts of the Kosovo, mostly populated by Serbians (except for few photographs here). If one is to tell the unbiased story, one must look at the both sides o the coin and put tremendous amount of effort in staying objective as journalist and storyteller. I am Serbian born and live in Belgrade, but I by no means defend the Serbian forces for what they have done during the '99 in Kosovo and the war crimes that have been committed. Those from armed forces and police forces that have done such crimes have to be arrested and sued by the international war crimes tribunal, like the majority is, but still, the percentage of those who were convicted on Serbian side is exceptionally bigger that those who were put to the trial and convicted, fighting on the KLA side. I am a amateur photographer also and I must stay on the side of the truth, no matter how hard it may be. Also, I must stand in the defense of Serbian people who died in great numbers on Kosovo, killed by PLA and NATO during the campaign in 99. People that didn't take any sides and their only crime was that they have lived in the parts of Kosovo taken over by Albanians. Thank you.
